Position Summary

The Department of Linguistics and Germanic, Slavic, Asian and African Languages at Michigan State University will make a tenure-track appointment in phonetics at the Assistant Professor level, to begin on August 16, 2019.

Duties will include active research, teaching, and service. The normal teaching load is two courses per semester. The successful candidate is expected to

  1. teach phonetics at undergraduate and graduate levels, plus other courses in their areas of expertise or courses in Integrative Studies in the Arts and Humanities (IAH) in the College of Arts and Letters,
  2. maintain an active research program,
  3. supervise theses/dissertations and mentor both graduate and undergraduate students, and
  4. engage in institutional and professional service.

Required Degree


Minimum Requirements

The successful candidate must have a PhD in Linguistics by the time of the appointment, college-level teaching experience and native or near native English language proficiency.

Desired Qualifications

The candidate should have a record of high quality research in experimental linguistic phonetics in the form of publications or presentations, and demonstrate a promising trajectory of scholarly engagement.

Special consideration will be given to candidates whose research and scholarly interests complement and connect with those of our current faculty. Applicants whose research engages in laboratory phonology, cognitive science, or fieldwork are particularly encouraged. Ability to teach experimental methods, statistics, or introduction to cognitive science is desirable.
