MSc/PhD in Quantitative Economics - University of Alicante

University of Alicante

The Graduate Program in Economics is a full-time American-style program that is taught entirely in English. The program immerses students in a dynamic and vibrant academic environment, and provides them with thorough theoretical and empirical training in the areas of microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. In addition, advanced courses are offered in each of these subject areas.

The aim of the program is to prepare students for professional careers in universities, public and private research organizations, international institutions, consultancy, and business.

The first two years of the Graduate Program consist of course-work and the writing of a Master’s thesis, which together allow students to obtain a Master’s degree in Economics. After these two years, those students who have demonstrated strong academic abilities, and a high research potential, are admitted to the PhD Program. In their PhD doctoral thesis students produce original research, with the end of obtaining the degree of Doctor (PhD) in Economics.

Our graduate students come from a wide variety of different countries, which helps contribute to the international spirit of our program. Financial support is available to graduate students, in the form of research and teaching assistantships.

The Master is a two-year academic program. Year one focuses on core courses in Mathematics, Statistics, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Econometrics.

In Year Two students take nine elective courses, in which students explore topics in the frontier of research.

The complete list of Specialization Courses currently offered by the Department of Economics can be found at the following URL:

By the end of the second year, students complete their Master’s theses under the direction of a faculty supervisor. In the thesis, students put to use the knowledge they have acquired through coursework, in order to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the literature in the research area that they have chosen to work in, along with the ability to make a novel research contribution

Starting in Year Three, students work on their PhD thesis under the supervision of faculty members. Students are required to participate in the weekly Department seminars, in which leading visiting scholars present their research. In addition, students are expected to present their own original research in Department workshops.

In order to be considered for acceptance into the PhD program a student must have obtained an average grade of at least 70 percent in the Master’s Program.

  • Our faculty has been trained in prestigious international and national universities, with a large fraction of young faculty members.
  • A small student-to-faculty ratio, what means that our students receive a lot of attention and support from the faculty.
  • An active Behavioral Economics group (topic for which the 2017 Nobel prize was awarded).
  • A wide range of research of topics: mathematical foundations of economics, macroeconomics, applied economics (in labor, health, education and development), and data science, among others.
  • The possibility of combining a rigorous and thorough training with a Mediterranean lifestyle.

During the first year, the Department provides the best students admitted to the program with a 8,000 euros financial support. From the second year on, financing is linked to Teaching or Research Assistantships on a competitive basis and -depending on the duties-  the amount provided by these fellowships ranges from 8,000 to 18,000 euros (gross) per year.

The Department strongly encourages our PhD students to participate in the international job market. In particular, our Placement Office provides financial and logistic support in order to facilitate the job searches of our PhD candidates. By participating in our Placement Workshop, candidates are able to prepare for all of the important aspects of the job market process. These include communication skills, mock interviews and seminars, how to select places to target, how to fill out applications, etc. Further, the Department provides additional financial support in order to enable our PhD candidates to participate in the international Job Market Meetings that are conducted annually in Europe and the United States.
